Let the hungry eat cake The Medford City Council members are historically correct in rejecting the living wage proposal. If the people are hungry, let them eat cake. - Ron Hawley, Jacksonville Writer feels Holt's pain It's too bad that the Corps of Engineers and Ric Holt can't seem to get their stories straight. This on-again, off-again project, has caused great consternation and anxiety in certain segments of our population, raising hopes and then dashing them the next day. Ric Holt, I feel your pain! - Yale Sacks, Central Point Timber people without credibility Once again we hear from the timber folks and their phony baloney about how forest improvement can be done in concert with commercial timber cutting (i.e., "sweetening the pot" by cutting the "money trees" to help cover costs), and how virtual clearcuts (called "regeneration cuts") are done for "salvage, cleanup, and in small patches to change the vegetation for the better" (Gordon Borchgrevink's guest opinion Sunday). Enough already! The timber people are without credibility. - Fred Fleetwood, Trail A challenge to Clinton bashers Challenge to Clinton-Reno bashers. Why don't you get up to speed on good ol' "W" and Ashcroft. This Enron scandal will offer an endless group of politicians with their hands out and their congressional door open. Double dog dare you to give them equal bashing garbage! - Don Basey, Eagle Point Tax teen drivers for schools How about a $1,000 to $1,500 fee for drivers licenses for those under 18, to be earmarked for schools? - Mike McCullch, Medford Borchgrevink a breath of fresh air Thanks to Gordon Borchgrevink for a "breath of fresh air" in his guest opinion on forest management. If the "naysayers" showed one half as much knowledge in their arguments, there would be much less environmental conflict. An old "fernhopper" - Daryl Farnham, Medford Epitome of illogic I can't believe the Mail Tribune even prints letters like this! The anti-meat diatribe in the Jan. 4 opinion section is the epitome of illogic and vegetarian hype. True enough, 2 to 4 million Americans are sickened annually by salmonella, but that only drives home the point made by the National Meat Association: Cook your meat thoroughly. It by no means indicates any inherit danger in eating that juicy T-bone you've been craving all week. Furthermore, while I deplore Tyson's illegal smuggling of immigrant labor into the country, The letter writer's hysterics about al-Qaida terrorists infecting your Sunday steak with anthrax is simply foolish. A large portion of our fruit and vegetable harvest is also picked by undocumented workers. Would he have us stop eating vegetables as well? Rather than resorting to the frenzied tradition of anti-meat activists to play on our fears, why doesn't the writer provide us with an intelligent argument that supports his beliefs? - Chris Luka, Medford Hats off to Ric Holt Our hats are off to Jackson County Commissioner Ric Holt for his relentless efforts to save Elk Creek Dam. Ric's efforts have met with success, and the next logical step is to complete the dam, generate some cheap hydroelectric energy for Jackson County residents, and use the extra water to save the fishery in the Rogue River when low water years threaten the smolts with parasitic extermination. - Carl F. Worden, Eagle Point |
