Arthur Samuel Adelung

The memorial service for Arthur Samuel Adelung will be at 11 a.m. today at Eagle Point National Cemetery. Larry Harden of Vineyard Christian Fellowship will officiate.

Mr. Adelung, 66, of Grants Pass, died Sunday (Feb. 17, 2002) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 698, Medford, OR 97501.

He was born Oct. 18, 1935, in Bayonne, N.J., a son of Jules and Beatrice Adelung.

Mr. Adelung drove a bus for Charter Bus Company. He also worked for the Harbor Patrol in San Francisco.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1954 to 1962, then with the U.S. Coast Guard Reserves.

He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1990 from Salinas, Calif.

In Bayonne, N.J., he was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and a Boy Scout leader. In Grants Pass, he managed a Little League team.

Survivors include his wife, Elaine F. Adelung, Grants Pass; two daughters, Amy Adelung, Grants Pass, and Dolores Cella, Bayonne; two sons, Jules and Arthur, both Bayonne; two brothers, Warren and Kenneth, Bayonne; three sisters, Marion Gambon, Pacific Grove, Calif., Betty Silva, Bayonne, and Joyce Narciso, Pine Brook, N.J.; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jules.

Lucille B. Hoppe

The graveside service for Lucille B. Hoppe will be at 2 p.m. today at Siskiyou Memorial Park in Medford.

Mrs. Hoppe, 88, of Medford, died Friday (Feb. 15, 2002) in Medford.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 10 Crater Lake Ave., Suite 10, Medford, OR 97504.

She was born Nov. 12, 1913, in Franklin, Ohio, the daughter of Howard and Anna (Sauter) Basore. On March 29, 1939, in Riverside, Calif., she married Charles Franklin Hoppe, who died in 1969. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1946 from Los Angeles.

Mrs. Hoppe owned and operated Hoppe's Greenhouse and Florist in Medford for 25 years.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She was a charter member and past royal matron of Roxy Ann Court, Order of the Amaranth, Reames Chapter No. 66, and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and Zuleima Temple and Daughters of the Nile.

Mrs. Hoppe enjoyed reading and playing cards.

Survivors include a stepson, Charles F. Hoppe, Bremerton, Wash.; and a stepdaughter, Dorothy Latham, Downey, Calif.

Milton Medcalf Jr.

The graveside memorial service for C. Milton "Milt" Medcalf Jr. will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Siskiyou Memorial Park, Medford. The Rev. John Dungey of Central Point will officiate.

Mr. Medcalf, 80, of Conway Spring, Kan., formerly of Medford, died Feb. 9, 2002, at Spring View Manor in Conway Springs, Kan.

He was born Jan. 21, 1922, in Hugo, Okla., a son of Cicero M. and Bertha Jane (Winkler) Medcalf Sr.

He moved to the Rogue Valley after serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II. On Jan. 25, 1953, he married Audrey June Fletcher, who died in 1983. They lived in the Rogue Valley until 1978.

Mr. Medcalf was a salesman for Valley Wholesale Company in Medford. After retiring, the family moved in 1978 to Lake Tahoe, Calif., where he and his wife studied to become real estate agents, which they did for five years. In 1983, they moved to Rocklin, Calif. He lived in Rocklin until 1995, when he moved to Harper, Kan., to be near his daughter, Gail Swafford.

Survivors include three daughters, Diane Lewis, Salem, Linda Rich, Sacramento, Calif., and Gail Swafford, Harper, Kan.; a brother, Ben, Gurdon, Ark.; a sister, Juanita Council, Marshall, Texas; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Bill, Victor and Mote; and two sisters, Byrda Rondoni and Audra Williams.

Merton K. 'Mickey' Hamlett

Merton Kenneth "Mickey" Hamlett, 93, of Medford, died Sunday (Feb. 17, 2002) at his home. No service is planned. Interment will be in Oakhill Memorial Park, Calif.

He was born June 11, 1908, in Fort Morgan, Colo. On Feb. 22, 1939, in Long Beach, Calif., he married Anita Maria Rumchr, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley 33 years ago from Santa Clara, Calif.

Mr. Hamlett served in the U.S. Navy for 30 years and was in Peal Harbor when it was bombed during World War II. Following his retirement from the Navy, he worked for Lockheed Aircraft Corp. in Sunnyvale, Calif., retiring in 1958.

He enjoyed square dancing and traveling.

He is survived by his wife, Anita, Medford.

Phyllis Rae Hunter

Phyllis Rae Hunter, 75, of Jacksonville, died Monday (Feb. 18, 2002) at a foster care home. No service is planned.

She was born Phyllis Rae Jacobs on Sept. 7, 1926, in Hutchinson, Kan. She received a bachelor's degree in theology in 1950 from Phillips University. In 1952, in Wichita, Kan., she married F. Gerome Hunter, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1960 from Redding, Calif.

In 1985, she received a bachelor's degree in education, and in 1986 a master's degree in music from what is now Southern Oregon University.

Mrs. Hunter was a piano and music teacher.

She was a member of the Jackson County Master Gardeners.

Mrs. Hunter enjoyed gardening, music, camping and fishing.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include three sons, Kevin, Michael and Brett, all Medford; a daughter, Jennifer Wright, Washougal, Wash.; and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother.

Mary T. Modrich

Mary T. Modrich, 89, of Ashland, died Feb. 13, 2002, at her home. A private service will be held.

She was born Dec. 25, 1912, at Chisholm, Minn. On Oct. 10, 1930, in Chisholm, she married John Modrich, who died in 1976. She lived in California and South Dakota in the 1950s and returned to Chisholm in 1956.

The Modrichs operated several grocery stores including the Budget Market and the Southside Market in Chisholm. Mrs. Modrich moved to Ashland in 1969, where she worked as a custodian at what is now Southern Oregon University from 1972 to 1978.

She was a member of the Rogue Valley Senior Singles.

Mrs. Modrich collected small coin banks. She enjoyed berry picking, canning and cooking, gardening and traveling.

Survivors include a son, Jon, Ashland; two daughters, Colleen Babich, Ashland, and Marilyn Zobitz, Orlando, Fla.; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Gene.

Alice Cora Tompkins-Daly

The funeral service for Alice Cora Tompkins-Daly will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Chapel of the Valley Funeral Home in Grants Pass. Jim Hoff will officiate. Interment will be at Granite Hill Cemetery in Grants Pass.

Mrs. Tompkins-Daly, 66, of Wimer, died Friday (Feb. 15, 2002) at her home.

She was born March 9, 1935, in Fleetville, Pa. In June 1950, in Bel Air, Md., she married Danverse Tompkins, who died in 1990. They moved to Grants Pass in 1965 from La Sierra, Calif. In November 2000, in Grants Pass, she married Philip Daly, who survives.

Mrs. Tompkins-Daly was a registered nurse.

She was a member of the Three Rivers Community Hospital Auxiliary and served as treasurer and gift nook buyer for the Auxiliary. She also served as treasurer of the State Board of Auxilians.

Mrs. Tompkins-Daly enjoyed her pinochle club and sewing.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two daughters, Renee Schroeder, Wimer, and Cheri Moran, Dalton, Pa.; two sons, Douglas Tompkins, Hillsboro, and Dan Tompkins, North Bend; two brothers, Gilbert Wademan, Fleetville, Pa., and Warren Wademan, Allentown, Pa.; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Marguerite Doris Friend

The funeral service for Marguerite Doris Friend will be at 2:30 p.m. today at Chapel of the Valley Funeral Home in Grants Pass. Pastor Wes Winn of the First Christian Church will officiate. Private interment will be at Hawthorne Memorial Gardens in Grants Pass.

Mrs. Friend, 80, of Grants Pass, died Saturday (Feb. 16, 2002) at Fairview Transitional Health Center.

She was born Sept. 25, 1921, in Huntington Park, Calif., a daughter of Buel and Doris Miller. The family moved to Grants Pass in 1936, and she graduated from Grants Pass High School in 1940. In 1945, she married Clair Tanner, who died in 1994. In 1997, she married Mel Friend, who survives.

Mrs. Friend worked in bookkeeping and retail sales at Montgomery Ward and French Laundry in Grants Pass. She also worked for the Nut Tree in California before her retirement.

She was a member of the Rogue River Valley Grange and the Grants Pass Dolls Club.

Mrs. Friend enjoyed collecting dolls, stamp collections, traveling and bingo.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include four stepdaughters, Celia Clark and Kathy Dechenne, both Grants Pass, Pearl Wedmore, Springfield, and Margaret Riley, Rancho Cordova, Calif.; two stepsons, Ernest Friend, Grants Pass, and Mel E. Friend, Medford; a sister, Clifta Hutchens, Rogue River; two brothers, Dean Miller, Grants Pass, and Curtis Miller, Winchester Bay; 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Joseph D. Gomes

Joseph D. Gomes, 60, of Ashland, died Friday (Feb. 15, 2002) at Ashland Community Hospital. No service is planned.

He was born July 1, 1941, in Lemoore, Calif., a son of Joseph and Alice Gomes. He was raised in Lemoore and Riverside, Calif., and lived in Fresno, Calif., for many years. He moved to Ashland in 1998.

Mr. Gomes was a car salesman for many years.

Survivors include a son, Joseph A. Jr., Saratoga, Wyo.; two brothers, Jimmy, Los Angeles, and Billy, Fresno, Calif.; and two grandchildren.

Mildred M. Brewer

Mildred M. Brewer, 54, of Butte Falls, died Saturday (Feb. 16, 2002) at Providence Medford Medical Center. No service is planned.

She was born June 25, 1947, in Crescent City, Calif., the daughter of Raymond Henry and Dorothy Gean (Lane) Sutton.

Ms. Brewer was a homemaker.

Survivors include a daughter, Tina Tumey, Butte Falls; two sons, John Tumey and Paul Brewer, both Butte Falls; her father, R.H. Sutton, Butte Falls; a brother, Raymond Sutton, Prospect; and eight grandchildren.

Evelyn M. Andrews

Evelyn M. Andrews, 81, of Gold Hill, died Thursday (Feb. 14, 2002) at her home. A private service will be held.

She was born May 6, 1920, in Dennison, Texas, the daughter of Sadie and Harry Bray, and was raised in Bonanza. On Feb. 10, 1938, in Mexico, she married Joe K. Andrews, who died in 1967. They moved to Eagle Point in 1947. She later lived in White City and Medford, and had lived in Gold Hill for the past five years.

Mrs. Andrews enjoyed music and singing in church.

Survivors include three sons, Joe K., Ashland, Walter S., Elko, Nev., and Paul J., Selma; three daughters, Darlene F. Pickard, Medford, Margie Corey, Klamath Falls, and Charlene Abney, Cave Junction; a brother, George Bray, Eugene; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
