Phoenix girls clinch District 6 title with shootout win over Mustangs

TALENT — It took 100 minutes of play and a pair of shootouts before the fifth-ranked Phoenix girls soccer team could officially call itself District 6 champs.

Hidden Valley (7-4, 5-2 Dist. 6) took the Pirates into a sudden death shootout, but couldn’t answer Sarah Kieffer’s goal, giving the Pirates a 2-1 victory on Thursday.

With the win, Phoenix (9-4, 7-0) now clinches the league title, while the Mustangs fall into a three-way tie for second place with Cascade Christian and North Valley.

Hidden Valley does hold a tiebreaker over both teams if the three should remain tied at the end of the regular season.

Larrisa Wiltrout put Phoenix on the board first with an unassisted goal in the 18th minute.

Shea Ford evened the game for Hidden Valley in the 38th with a score, marking the final goal in regulation for either side.

The Pirates held a 20-12 advantage in shots on goal in regulation and a 6-1 edge in overtime.

"There were chances there for both teams (to score) in regulation," said Phoenix coach John Doty. "Neither one of us could capitalize on anything."

Hidden Valley goalkeeper Shantell Pennington made several point-blank saves to keep her squad in the game, while Ford, Erin Wilson and Nina Jaramillo did a good job of counter-attacking the Pirates.
