Jean Zilhaver Francis

The memorial service for Jean Zilhaver Francis will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church in Ashland.

Mrs. Francis, 83, formerly of Ashland, died Friday (Nov. 2, 2001) at her daughter's home in Klamath Falls.

She was born March 27, 1918, in Cambridge Springs, Pa., the daughter of Charles and Arlie Jones Zilhaver. On Oct. 21, 1939, in Meadville, Pa., she married Paul Edward Francis, who preceded her in death.

After graduating from high school and Jamestown Business College in Pennsylvania, Mrs. Francis worked as an executive secretary for the Pennsylvania Department of Public Assistance from 1942 to 1944.

In St. Paul, Minn., she worked as a paraprofessional librarian at Macalester College Library from 1961 to 1975. Volunteer activities in addition to church included service with the Model Cities program of St. Paul, Parents of Integrated Education, Catholic Interfaith Interracial Council and the Greater Metropolitan Area Committee for Better Schools. She also was active in the civil rights movement.

In Ashland, she worked for KSOR public radio for several years and as a volunteer with the League of Women Voters, Peace House, the Crop Walk and Jefferson Public Radio marathons.

Survivors include four daughters, Polly Francis, Klamath Falls, Rebecca Francis Smith, West Linn, Judith Francis, Portland, and Anne Francis Smith, San Anselmo, Calif.; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister and a half-brother.

Dora Barbara Combest

Dora Barbara Combest, 94, of Medford, died Sunday (Nov. 4, 2001) at Hearthstone. No service is planned.

She was born Dec. 4, 1906, in Gallup, N.M., the daughter of Nicholas and Antonia Kucan Andler. In 1923, in Albuquerque, N.M., she married Steve Gunjaca, who was killed in a mining accident in 1925. In 1931, in Los Lunas, N.M., she married Clark Combest, who died in 1965.

Mrs. Combest owned and operated restaurants in Cave Junction. She also managed dining services at Diamond Lake Resort.

She enjoyed gardening, traveling, reading and cooking.

Survivors include a daughter, Anne Wolthoff, Medford; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Hjalmer Edwards

The funeral service for Hjalmer Edwards will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Perl Funeral Home at Siskiyou Memorial Park Medford.

Mr. Edwards, 84, of Central Point, died Sunday (Nov. 4, 2001) at Three Fountains Care Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Medford Senior Center, 510 E. Main St., Medford, OR 97504.

He was born Jan. 30, 1917, in Fessenden, N.D., a son of Royal and Fern Edwards. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1939 from North Dakota. On Feb. 2, 1949, at the First United Methodist Church in Medford, he married Irene Holman, who survives.

Mr. Edwards was a salesman with Jorgesen's Dairy in Medford.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Mr. Edwards was a lifetime member of the Old Time Fiddlers.

He enjoyed playing his fiddle, dancing and motorcycles.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a sister, Velma Knapp, Central Point. He was preceded in death by a brother.

Iris Verna Sullivan

The memorial service for Iris Verna Sullivan will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Conger-Morris Funeral Home, Medford.

Mrs. Sullivan, 86, of Enumclaw, Wash., formerly of Medford, died Saturday (Nov. 3, 2001) in Enumclaw.

Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

She was born Dec. 14, 1914, in Almeda, a daughter of Charles and Lovella Long. The family moved to Talent from Grants Pass in 1918 and she attended Talent schools through the 12th grade. On Aug. 15, 1960, in Reno, Nev., she married Burdette Sullivan, who died in 1993.

Mrs. Sullivan was a saleswoman. For many years, she also worked as a dental assistant.

She was a member of the Southern Oregon Dental Assistants Association, the Eagles Lodge and the First Presbyterian Church in Medford.

Mrs. Sullivan enjoyed tatting, crocheting and needlepoint, camping, fishing and gardening.

Survivors include four sons, Pat, Mike and Dennis Sullivan, all Medford, and Rick Frazier, Auburn, Wash.; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.

Friends may pay their respects from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.

Genevieve L. (Brown) LeGore

The memorial service for Genevieve Lydia (Brown) LeGore will be at 1 p.m. Friday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 750 W. Keady Court, Roseburg. Pastor Phillip Brandt will officiate. Inurnment will be in Roseburg National Cemetery.

Mrs. LeGore, 82, of Sutherlin, formerly of Ashland, died Thursday (Nov. 1, 2001) in a Roseburg hospital.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church and School, 750 W. Keady Court, Roseburg, OR 97470.

She was born Feb. 13, 1919, in Gaylord, Minn., a daughter of Albert and Minnie (Kohler) Sommer. She attended schools in Minnesota and graduated from business school in Minneapolis. She married Ron Brown. In 1947, the family moved to Ashland.

After moving to Roseburg, she worked at the Veterans Affairs Hospital for 31 years. Following her retirement in 1979, she married Ted LeGore, who survives.

Mrs. LeGore was a lifetime member of the Missouri Lutheran Church and was active in the Lutheran Women's Missionary League. She was a volunteer and past district secretary for the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and volunteered with the American Association of Retired Persons (now AARP).

She enjoyed her family, camping, the Bible and traveling the Oregon Coast.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a daughter, Connie Brown, Roseburg; two sons, Ryan Brown, Springfield, and Ron Brown, Eugene; two stepchildren, Tim LeGore and Elaine Harger; three grandchildren; and four step-grandchildren.

Arthur O. Carter

The graveside service for Arthur O. Carter will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Logtown Cemetery in Jacksonville.

Mr. Carter, 83, of Winston, formerly of Jacksonville, died Sunday (Nov. 4, 2001) at the Roseburg Veterans Affairs Hospital.

He was born March 8, 1918, in Jacksonville, a son of John and Eva (Horn) Carter. On Nov. 22, 1938, in Grants Pass, he married Sarah Faye North, who died in 1994. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1971 from Camas Valley.

Mr. Carter was a logger for companies in the Southern Oregon and Northern California areas until the 1940s. He then worked in lumber mills in Cave Junction, Happy Camp, Calif., and in Gold Beach, retiring from Camac Veneer in Eugene in 1967.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Texas and Florida.

Mr. Carter was a member of the Central Point Calvary Temple Church.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include three sons, James, Roseburg, David, Camas Valley, and Don, Winston; a sister, Mabel Jordan, Jacksonville; a stepsister, Verna Lawrence, Jacksonville; 13 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Arthur M.; three sisters and three brothers.

Friends may pay their respects from 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Central Valley Chapel, Central Point.

Ida Amelia Conrad

The funeral service for Ida Amelia Conrad will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Memory Gardens Chapel in Medford. Pastor Irvin Bostwick Jr. will officiate. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens Memorial Park.

Mrs. Conrad, 81, of Spanaway, Wash., formerly of White City, died Thursday (Nov. 1, 2001) in Spanaway.

She was born Ida Bray on Jan. 3, 1920, in Cherokee, Kan. On Aug. 28, 1937, in Cherokee, Kan., she married Clarence F. Conrad, who died in 1997. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1960 from the Los Angeles area.

Mrs. Conrad was a homemaker. She also taught Bible study and was a member of Emmanuel Temple in Medford. She moved to Spanaway in 1995.

She enjoyed playing music, crocheting and traveling.

Survivors include two daughters, Idella Sue Knapp, Medford, and Norma Gene Hastings, Spanaway; three sons, Elmer Leroy, Bandon, and Clarence Ray and John Michael, both Roseburg; a brother, Elmer Bray, in Oregon; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.

Edward Thomas Russell

Edward Thomas Russell, 80, of Medford, died Saturday (Nov. 3, 2001) at his home. A private service was held. Interment will be in Eagle Point National Cemetery.

He was born Aug. 12, 1921, in Spokane, Wash., a son of Edward and Ella Russell. On May 10, 1943, in San Francisco, he married Elsie Ruth Thomas, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1971 from Orinda, Calif.

Mr. Russell was a fireman for the Navy Supply Depot in Spokane, Wash., for 12 years.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Mr. Russell was a member of the Lutheran church.

He enjoyed woodworking.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Donald J., Oakland, Calif.; a daughter, Leanne Delk, Medford; two brothers, William A., Havasu City, Ariz., and Charles S., Seattle, Wash.; a sister, Henrietta E. Berry, Medford; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert F.

Orpha Mae Herbst

Orpha Mae Herbst, 81, of Jacksonville, died Sunday (Nov. 4, 2001) in an automobile accident. Arrangements will be announced by Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.

Marie Elizabeth Furrer

Marie Elizabeth Furrer, 73, of Ashland, died Sunday (Nov. 4, 2001) at Ashland Community Hospital. Arrangements will be announced by Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Crematory, Ashland.

Vern Byxbe

The funeral service for Vern Byxbe will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Perl Funeral Home Chapel.

Mr. Byxbe, 74, of Central Point, died Sunday (Nov. 4, 2001) at Three Fountains.

Friends may pay their respects at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Perl Funeral Home Chapel.
