Since You Asked Virus can be masked as e-mail alert I have received via e-mail two different virus alerts in the last two weeks. Is it possible to actually send a virus masking it as a virus alert? - Christine G., Medford "Absolutely. That can happen," says Paul Lieberman, Southern Oregon University computer systems engineer. He would probably trash a virus alert he got as an e-mail if he didn't know the sender. He recommends against opening any suspicious e-mail because that could import a virus. "There's nothing safe. Everybody needs to have the best virus suppression they can have on their computers," said Lieberman. "SOU has three levels of virus suppression in its computer system. Even with three layers, you can still get them." Virus software also needs to be up to date. Many vendors send out updates that their anti-virus programs automatically download when a computer hooks up to the Internet. When there are new threats, updates may go out several times per day.
