Writer should thank a deity
The writer of "Stop telling me what to think" should thank Allah, or God, or the Lord of the Sun and the Lady of the Moon that she does not live in a country that would kill her for not only publishing, but having those opinions. — Amy Rinkle, Medford North vs. South game refreshing My hat is off to the administrators that have taken on the worthy challenge of bringing together these two great schools and helping the students realize that they are not enemies of one another, but that they can each inspire the other, to reach beyond their own expectations. Thank you to the students and coaches for seeing beyond the immediate goal of winning "at all costs." Friday night was different. Refreshingly different. Thank you. — Rob Larson, Medford Americans losing their liberties Good Christian Cal Thomas gives Bush the green light to use nuclear weapons even though American military leaders, among other rational people, say that the use of such weapons is immoral. And the head of the Green Party USA is arrested and barred from all airports because the Green Party has called for an end to the bombing. American citizens are losing their liberties in this so-called "war." The only winners are greedy corporate bloodsuckers. — Gerald Cavanaugh, Ashland Take your business elsewhere How nice that the group of women you described in the "Shopping for America" article are going to give the merchants up north a shot in the arm with their spending. How sad they are giving local merchants a poke in the eye. The article states they own local businesses. Take your business elsewhere, too. — Jim Norfleet, Medford We stand by our comments We stand by our comments about "God Bless America" signs in schools, on the grounds of appropriateness of place. We would never resort to the level of our critic in Shady Cove, telling someone we disagreed with to, in essence, shut up and "lump it." We all get to speak our minds in this society, even if what’s on our minds is not currently in vogue. — Geoffrey and Joi Riley, Talent Story vaguely disquieting The Saturday story about the local business women's trip to Portland for clothes shopping was vaguely disquieting. A patriotically motivated activity is great. However, shouldn't these business women have been conscious of their local base? After all, they are looking for sales of one sort or another with the very people they have just ignored. — Marian T. Schwenk, Phoenix Harry Potter satanic With the events of the past month in these United States, caused by the satanic forces of the al-Qaida, I find it totally unacceptable that the Jackson County schools are promoting Satanism in the form of Harry Potter books. Let’s face it, the Harry Potter books are not just another kids’ book. They encourage our children to embrace witchcraft and sorcery. God did not intend us to be worshipping, or emulating, witches and goblins, which is what Harry Potter books are all about. He merely asked us to love God with all our hearts and souls and to love our neighbor as we love ourselves. A particular case in point on the schools encouraging children to buy and read these books is an entire bulletin board dedicated to Harry Potter books at Abraham Lincoln Elementary School. Also, most elementary schools display Harry Potter advertising posters courtesy of Scholastic Books. Not once have I seen a poster advertising the Bible in our public schools, so why are we furthering the cause of evil by allowing our school’s administrators to reap the rewards offered by Scholastic? I truly believe that all of you parents out there need to address this unscrupulous practice to the principals of the school your children attend. It’s time to demand an end to this malicious advertising of ungodly publications. Have you even taken the time to read one of these books to see, for yourselves, the evil content? — G. Philip Brennen, Medford Consider the lives of others I would like to address the issue of smoking in public places. It really disturbs me when smokers don't consider the health of others. True, smokers have the right to inhale toxins if they choose, however, they don't have the right to endanger the life of another, because that is exactly what they are doing. Secondhand smoke is a leading cause of lung cancer and for those smokers who do not realize this, please consider the lives of others before you smoke around them. — Laura Jones, Rogue River |
