I keep seeing on the news reports that the Taliban is saying to bin Laden it is OK for him to wage jihad on America. So what on earth is it? - Teri S., Eagle Point Well, Teri, the western press generally has used the word to mean "holy war," but according to a University of Northumbria (England) Web site (www.unn.ac.uk/societies/islamic/jargon), the word jihad literally means "striving," as in striving to achieve a high moral standard. While it may involve military action, it pertains more to self-betterment.
