Sutherlin drops Phoenix SUTHERLIN - For one game on Saturday, the Phoenix High volleyball team looked like it would cruise into the state playoffs. But the Pirates (21-10) let down their guard and couldn't retain its momentum in a 15-7, 14-16, 14-16 loss to Sutherlin in a Class 3A sub-tournament game. "We lost our aggressiveness and didn't recover until it was too late," said Phoenix coach Tom Murphy. "They were the aggressor. They were dictating the tempo." The Pirates cruised to the win in Game 1, but weren't the same team the rest of the way. Sutherlin swung the momentum with a narrow victory in Game 2, then jumped out to a 13-2 lead in the decisive game. Phoenix rallied to tie at 14-14 but Sutherlin served out the match. "The first game we did a good job of serve receive and we were able to turn that into good offense that they couldn't handle," said Murphy. "For some reason in Game 2 we kind of stepped back and they pounded it at us." Tiffany Ross led the Pirates with 21 kills. April Darby added 11 kills and setter Kelsey Russell had 37 assists. Jennifer Dunlap chipped in nine digs. "We made some key errors at some key times," said Murphy. "It's a disappointing way to end for us. But it was a very good season." ST. MARY'S 10-15-17, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 15-12-15 - At Ashland, St. Mary's fought off two match-point attempts by Cascade Christian to pull out a win and earn the No. 1 seed out of the Southern Cascade League. The Crusaders (19-10, 9-1 SCL) play a first-round state playoff game on Thursday at 7 p.m. against the No. 2 team from the Wapiti Conference. Second-seeded Cascade Christian (22-4, 9-1 SCL) takes on the top-seeded team from the Tri-Valley League at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Challengers fought back from a 14-12 deficit in the third and decisive game to take a 15-14 lead. But St. Mary's survived Cascade Christian's match-point rallies to pull out the win. Whitney Brookins had 40 assists and scored nine points in the first-game win for the Challengers. Krystle Holtz had six digs and nine kills, while Kristin Salamone added four kills and six blocks. Kayleen Conley had nine digs, five kills and four blocks. Freshman Brittany Farrer had a career-high 10 kills for St. Mary's and Chrissy Seus was 11-for-11 from the service line to go along with three aces, 12 digs and eight kills. Teammate Libby Trum had 15 digs and eight kills, while setter Melissa Anderson contributed 30 assists. LAKEVIEW 15-15, TOLEDO 1-8 - At Lakeview, defending state champion Lakeview gained a berth in the state tournament with the state playoff home victory against the No. 3 team from the Val-Co League. The Honkers open tournamant play against Cowapa League champion Ranier at 10 a.m. Friday at Lane Community College. Against Toledo, Francis Hartman and Jess Childreth each pounded eight kills. The Honkers front line dominated with 17 blocks. SKYLINE A LEAGUE DISTRICT TOURNAMENT - Days Creek earned the district's No. 1 berth to the Class 2A state tournament and Elkton nailed down the No. 2 berth at North Medford High. Butte Falls lost to each team and was eliminated from further action. Days Creek defetaed the Loggers 15-13, 10-15, 15-5 and Elkton beat them 15-17, 15-10, 15-8. Sophomore outside hitter Asia Million had 16 kills and 16 digs to pace the Loggers. Sophomore middle Cassy Bartel chipped in 13 blocks and senior setter Jessica Dunlap and sophomore middle Sarah Matthews had six aces each for Butte Falls, which finished its season with a 16-9 record. Million and Kathi St. George made the all-tournament team for Butte Falls. Other members of the all-star squad were Jenna Swearingen and Kristen Zosel of Elkton and Bridie Hunt, Jamie Dunn and Kate Ludwig of Days Creek. |
