South blanks Hood River South Medford's defense has set the tone for the Panthers all season. And the South defense came up big again Saturday in a Class 4A girls soccer state first-round playoff game. Amber Stevens netted two goals as Southern Oregon Conference champion South Medford defeated Hood River Valley 3-0 at Fichtner-Mainwaring Park. The Panthers (12-2-1) advance to the round of 16 with a matchup Tuesday at South Salem, which defeated Canby 3-0 Friday. "The South Medford girls build their whole attack from the back," South Medford coach Buzz Thielemann said. "The four girls back there dictate the offense." Colleen Salisbury broke a scoreless tie in the 23rd minute on a direct kick from 20 yards. It was the third time this season Salisbury has converted on a direct kick. "Colleen kicked over the wall and found the upper-V," said Thielemann. "It's something we continually work on." At the 34th minute, Stevens scored the first of two goals. Stevens took a crossing pass across the face of the goal from Salisbury and scored from 6 yards out. "Colleen Salisbury dominated the midfield today," said Thielemann. "She just had a great day. Her confidence has grown and she takes liberties when she has the offensive opportunities." Stevens scored unassisted 22 minutes into the second half. Brittany and Courtney Quinowski helped South control the defensive zone. Courtney Quinowski was taken out when she received a yellow card on a collision with Hood River's Michelle Halliday. Annie Singler came off the bench to bolster the Panthers' defense. South junior goalkeeper Sarah Bryan recorded her eighth shutout of the season. JESUIT 7, KLAMATH UNION 0 - At Portland, top-ranked Jesuit held only a 1-0 lead late in the first half, but scored again just 28 seconds before the break. The Crusaders pulled away in the second half against the SOC third-place team. Jesuit hosts Lakeridge, a 1-0 winner over Centennial, in Tuesday's second round. North Medford's best chance to score came midway through the second half when Zach Taylor headed a shot that the Corvallis goalie bobbled. Sophomore David Oliver played brilliantly in goal for the Black Tornado, which finished its season with an 8-5-1 record. CRESCENT VALLEY 3, ASHLAND 1 - Crescent Valley's Brandon Kirkbride scored on a through ball in the 58th minute, snapping a 1-1 tie and leading the Raiders past the Grizzlies in a first-round state playoff match. But Ashland forward Jesse Hodges tied the match at 1-1 in the 51st minute when he dribbled through the Raiders defense and knocked in a shot from 15 yards out. Patrick Fenner had Crescent Valley's third goal in the 69th minute when he stole a back pass from Grizzly defender Al Christlieb and put it into the net. Crescent Valley outshot the Grizzlies 11-8.
