Mustangs beat IV but don't make the playoffs MURPHY - The Hidden Valley football team needed a win and a little help to capture a Class 3A state playoff berth. The Mustangs used a strong fourth-quarter ground attack to pull away for a 25-13 win over Illinois Valley on Friday, but they didn't get the help they needed. Hidden Valley, which finished the season 5-4 overall and 4-2 in the Skyline Conference, needed Mazama to beat Henley in order to land the conference's third and final playoff berth. But Henley beat Mazama, 37-26, to claim third. Tim VanderStoel capped a strong season with 110 yards on the ground on 14 carries and scored two late touchdowns to seal the win. Illinois Valley fought back to even the score at 13-13 heading into halftime. The score remained tied until VanderStoel darted into the end zone from 26 yards out with just under seven minutes remaining. The senior added an insurance touchdown from 10 yards out three minutes later. The Cougars, who finished the season 3-5 overall and 1-6 in the Skyline, amassed 176 yards of offense, while Hidden Valley had 251 with 127 coming on the ground. HENLEY 37, MAZAMA 26 - At Klamath Falls, Kirk Cunningham scored three touchdowns and rushed for 221 yards as Henley secured the Skyline Conference No. 2 spot in the state playoffs. The Hornets (5-4, 4-2 Skyline) will host seventh-ranked Reedsport in the opening round of the Class 3A state playoffs next week. Mazama led 7-6 at halftime. Cunningham rallied the Hornets in the second half with touchdown runs of 7, 63 and 56 yards. Henley totaled 523 yards in offense, while Mazama had 380. Seth Morehouse rushed for a game-high 248 yards and scored one touchdown for the Vikings (3-6, 2-4 Skyline). Mazama.....................................................0 7 6 13

ROGUE RIVER 8, LAKEVIEW 7 - At Rogue River, sophomore quarterback Matt Frederick's touchdown and two-point conversion run in the fourth quarter carried Rogue River to its first victory of the season in the final game at Beck Field. Frederick's 13-yard punt return gave the Chieftains (1-8, 0-6 Skyline) good field position at the Lakeview 48 for their winning drive. Rogue River needed six plays to go the distance, with Frederick covering the final yard for the TD with 6:41 remaining in the game. He then blasted into the end zone on an off-tackle play for the game-winning conversion points. Frederick gained 120 of Rogue River's 146 yards on the ground and passed for 65 more. Lakeview took a 7-0 lead with 7:27 left in the second quarter on a 70-yard pass play from Casey Longacre to Ryan Nash. The Honkers had a balanced attack with 121 yards coming on the ground and 131 through the air. The Rogue River defense was spearheaded by defensive back Tim Love, who had an interception and provided good run support, and middle linebacker Frederick. Southern Cascade League CASCADE CHRISTIAN 35, GILCHRIST 15 - At White City, Mychal Sha led a potent ground attack and Cascade Christian finished the season with the Southern Cascade League romp at the V.A. Domiciliary. The Challengers (4-5, 2-2 SCL) amassed 393 yards of total offense. Sha carried eight times for 129 yards and touchdowns of 41 and 25 yards. Zach Mellow ran for 73 yards and a 12-yard touchdown, and Brandon Armstrong ran for 75 yards. Mellow also had two fourth-quarter interceptions that set up touchdowns. The Challengers limited Gilchrist to 199 yards of offense. Gilchrist.........................................................7

Skyline A League BUTTE FALLS 50, PROSPECT 0 - At Butte Falls, Butte Falls (6-2, 5-2 Skyline A) scored twice before running a play from scrimmage and ended the game at the close of the third quarter on the 45-point mercy rule with its fourth kick return for a touchdown. The Loggers tied for second in the Skyline A League with North Lake - a 44-21 winner over Paisley Friday - but the North Lake advances to the Class 1A eight-man state playoffs because of a 28-8 victory over Butte Falls on Oct. 26. Prospect completed the season winless at 0-8. Dan Stark's 55-yard punt return for a TD ended the game as time expired in the third quarter. Nick Rodgers returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown. After Prospect had to punt on its first series, Kayle Freeman took the kick for a 50-yard TD. Butte Falls scored on its third play from scrimmage in the opening quarter on a 40-yard pass from quarterback Shannon Sizemore to Rodgers. Rodgers completed the first-half scoring on a 70-yard punt return that gave the Loggers a 30-0 lead. Prospect....................................................... 0 0
