Mary Elizabeth Pownell

The graveside service for Mary Elizabeth Pownell will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Medford.

Mrs. Pownell, 86, of Prospect, formerly of Roseburg, died Sunday (March 4, 2001) at her home in Prospect.

Memorial contributions may be made to Meals on Wheels Inc., 110 E. Main St., Ashland, OR 97520.

She was born Nov. 3, 1914, in Minatare, Neb., a daughter of George and Vina Hamilton. She lived in Roseburg from 1928 to 1962, when she moved to the Rogue Valley area.

Mrs. Pownell worked as a cook for A.S.V. Carpenter at Topside Restaurant, Cubby’s, the Medford Hotel and for Maxy’s, retiring at age 83.

She was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels.

Mrs. Pownell enjoyed her dogs, horses and taking road trips.

Survivors include six sons, Ray and Jack Gaswint, White City, Charles Arguijo, White City, Fred Conn, Albany, Gary Conn and Larry Arguijo, both Battle Ground, Wash.; two daughters, Margaret Moffitt, Medford, and Josephine Bodini, Vancouver, Wash.; three brothers, Jack, Ray and Roy Hamilton, all in Wyoming; a sister, Daisy Wilson, in Wyoming; and 19 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband.

Friends may pay their respects from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Central Valley Chapel, Central Point.

 

‘Lou’ McClanahan

The memorial service for Llewellyn "Lou" McClanahan will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Eagle Point National Cemetery. Lenny Meyer of North Valley Christian Center and the American Legion honor guard will officiate.

Mr. McClanahan, 82, of Medford, died Thursday (March 1, 2001) at Medford Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center.

He was born Aug. 13, 1918, in Prater, W.Va. On Jan. 21, 1976, in Reno, Nev., he married Hazel Wheeler, who died in 1996. They moved to Rogue Valley in 1959 from California and lived mostly in the Prospect area.

Mr. McClanahan was a timber faller.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Survivors include two sons, Paul, Carson, Wash., and Dick, Audrey, Wash.; a stepson, Frank Simmons, Shady Cove; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Danny.

Lisa Dawn Chaney

The funeral service for Lisa Dawn Chaney will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Eagle Point Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Mrs. Chaney, 41, of Trail, died Saturday (March 3, 2001) at her home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 698, Medford, OR 97501.

She was born July 14, 1959, in Ashland, a daughter of Ben and Georgia Evans. She graduated from Ashland High School and lived in the Rogue Valley all her life. On April 26, 1980, in Ashland, she married Steven Chaney, who survives. The marriage was sealed in the Oakland Latter-day Saints temple in 1981.

Mrs. Chaney was the manager at Country View Mobile Estates.

She was a member of the Ashland Wranglerettes Equestrian Drill Team, the Parent-Teacher Association and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Mrs. Chaney enjoyed horses, artwork, including drawing and crafts, and spending time with her family.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a son, Scott Thomas, Trail; three daughters, April Dawn Chaney, Sara-Maree Dawn Chaney, and Sage-Hannah Dawn Chaney, all Trail; her mother, Georgia Evans Howard, Umatilla; two sisters, Ruth E. Sipp, Hermiston, and Joy Evans Jurgens, Vancouver, Wash. She was preceded in death by her father, Ben Evans.

Archie Earle Edmunson

The graveside service for Archie Earle Edmunson will be at 2 p.m. today at Eagle Point National Cemetery.

Mr. Edmunson, 88, of Medford, died Friday (March 2, 2001) at Providence Medford Medical Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shepherd of the Valley Catholic Church, 600 Beebe Road, Central Point, OR 97502.

He was born Oct. 29, 1912, in Seattle. In 1956, in Seoul, Korea, he married Ahe Jin Han, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1967 from Seoul.

Mr. Edmunson was a U.S. Army staff sergeant. He retired in 1966. In the Rogue Valley, he worked as a cook at the Rogue Valley Country Club.

He was a member of the French Panhard Club.

Mr. Edmunson enjoyed foreign and antique automobiles, motorcycles and animals.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Jony Wilson, Central Point; two stepsons, Dennis Edmunson, San Jose, Calif., and Bill Edmunson, Central Point; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers; and three sisters.

Josephine V. McCormick

The memorial service for Josephine V. McCormick will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Gold Hill Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Mrs. McCormick, 99, of Gold Hill, died Saturday (March 3, 2001) in Central Point.

She was born April 8, 1901, in Storm Lake, Iowa, the daughter of John and Minnie (Florey) Herbert. On Aug. 10, 1945, in Reno, Nev., she married Harold W. McCormick, who died in 1976. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1956 from Reno, Nev.

Mrs. McCormick was a member of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Survivors include a son, Brian H., Gold Hill; two grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Edna Mae Kelso

The memorial service for Edna Mae Kelso will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Lundberg’s L.B. Hall Funeral Home, Grants Pass. Pastor Wes Winn of the First Christian Church will officiate. Inurnment will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Mrs. Kelso, 89, of Grants Pass, died Feb. 26, 2001 at Fairview Transitional Health Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

She was born Feb. 4, 1912, in Rome, Ga. In 1929, in Knoxville, Tenn., she married Ray Kelso, who died in 1994. They moved to Grants Pass in 1964 from San Francisco.

Mrs. Kelso enjoyed traveling and fishing.

Survivors include a son, Lynn, Tucson, Ariz.; three sisters, Dorothy Gibson, San Francisco, Betty Plumly, Flintstone, Ga., and Patty Williamson, Chickamauga, Ga.; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Yvonne Virdell Hodgson

The memorial service for Yvonne Virdell Hodgson will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Ashland Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Ms. Hodgson, 73, of Keizer, formerly of Medford, died Saturday (March 3, 2001) in Keizer.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Jehovah’s Witnesses, 25 Columbia Heights, Brooklyn, NY 11201.

She was born Yvonne Van Duzee on Oct. 4, 1927, in Milwaukee.

Ms. Hodgson was a homemaker. She lived in the Medford area for 2½ years.

She was a member of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Survivors include three daughters, Reneé Pister, Moses Lake, Wash., Cheryl Elbek, Wallkill, N.Y., and Gigi Lucy, Yreka, Calif.; a son, Ron, Keizer; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Sheila Winters Doyle

The memorial service for Sheila Winters Doyle will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Shepherd of the Valley Church in Central Point. The Rev. Jim Clifford will officiate.

Ms. Doyle, 56, of Medford, died Friday (March 2, 2001) at Providence Medford Medical Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Jackson County Animal Shelter, 5595 South Pacific Highway, Phoenix, OR 97535.

She was born May 3, 1944, in Arcadia, Fla. She moved to the Rogue Valley from California 18 years ago.

Ms. Doyle worked at the Medford Clinic for five years, for the Drug and Alcohol Council at Serenity Lane for two years and also at the Community Health Center.

She enjoyed crafts, fishing, Shakespeare and whale watching.

Survivors include a son, Scott Dater, Huntington Beach, Calif.; and a sister, Diana Readence, Medford. She was preceded in death by a son, Andrew.

John Daniel Blasen Jr.

John Daniel Blasen Jr., 74, of Ashland, died Thursday (March 1, 2001) at an Ashland care facility. A private service is planned. Inurnment will be at Willamette National Cemetery, Portland.

He was born Aug. 6, 1926, in Tillamook, the son of John and Gladyse Phillips Blasen Sr. In 1995, in Portland, he married Lynette West, who died in 1998. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1998 from Salem, where he had lived for eight years.

Mr. Blasen was a graphic designer and fine artist in the Portland and San Francisco areas.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Mr. Blasen enjoyed fishing, photography and painting.

Survivors include two sons, Aaron, Ashland, and Eric, Fairfax, Calif.; a daughter, Jeri Dawn Root, in Maryland; a sister, Marilyn Roecker, Beaverton; and four grandchildren.

Mary Daisy Hamrick

Mary Daisy Hamrick, 93, of Medford, died Sunday (March 4, 2001) at Prime Time Retirement Apartments in Medford. Graveside services will be held later this week in Cartersville, Ga.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Crematory, Ashland.

 

Violet Rogers,

Violet Rogers, 85, of Ashland, died Sunday (March 4, 2001) at Medford Health and Rehabilitation Center. Arrangements will be announced by Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

 

Michael E. Topar

The memorial service for Michael E. Topar will be at noon Sunday at McKee Bridge in Applegate. Mr. Topar’s fiancee, Josee Fournier of Ashland, will officiate.

Mr. Topar, 49, of Rogue River, died Feb. 17, 2001, at Rogue Valley Medical Center.
