Sills wins title at wrestling tournament OREGON CITY — Mike Sills garnered Southern Oregon University’s only title and the Raiders qualified two more wrestlers for the NAIA national championships at the Clackamas Community College Open Saturday. Sills defeated Alan Djomessi, the South African national champion representing North Idaho College, 4-3, in the 197-pound finals. Sills, ranked sixth nationally, won his third straight tournament. "Mike wrestled a smart match against a powerful, great athlete," Southern Oregon coach Mike Ritchey said. "He did a great job of staying away from the guy’s explosiveness." Southern Oregon’s Mark Harris (125) and Abe Haddon (184) finished second in the tournament and became the 17th and 18th Raiders to qualify for the NAIA nationals. Neither wrestler competed in the finals because of injuries. "Our main objective was to get guys qualified," said Ritchey. "We just wrestled the guys who were healthy." Freshman John Sills (164) — Mike’s brother — and Devin Cole (285) also were runners-up. Other Southern Oregon placers were Nolan Harris, third at 125, and Lee Ottow, fourth at 133. Dan Sturgell (184), who recently returned from injury, won two matches. He then pulled out as a precaution against injury. Women’s Basketball SOUTHERN OREGON 91, EASTERN OREGON 48 — At LaGrande, freshman guard Lindsey Hilaire scored a career-high 19 points and Sarah Petersen added 18 as Southern Oregon (8-10, 5-1 Cascade) rebounded from its first conference loss on Friday. Petersen, the former Ashland High star, turned in her best performance of the season. Petersen didn’t miss a shot, making 7 of 7 from the field and 4 of 4 from the line. "We played very well for the entire game," Southern Oregon coach Shirley Huyett said. "We were putting some good pressure on them, and we really shot the ball well." The Raiders shot 51 percent from the floor in the first half and connected on 50 percent after the break. |
