Sears stink bomb link to Target case probed By SARAH LEMON At least one suspect who set off a stink bomb in Sears on Wednesday evening may have been involved in a similar prank at Target, police said. An odor coming from a broken vial of ammonium sulfide in Sears' jewelry section was reported to police Wednesday at 7:18 p.m. Medford police and firefighters responded, but shoppers did not evacuate. Shoppers at Target, however, were forced to leave the store on Dec. 22 around 1 p.m. when three stink bombs - also vials of ammonium sulfide - were broken on the floor. Medford's hazardous materials team responded to clean up the yellowish liquid chemical, which is not considered a hazardous substance. Target managers estimated the store lost $70,000-$100,000 in revenue on one of the busiest shopping days of the year. Medford detectives are examining Target surveillance videos taken just before the chemical was discovered. Police said they believe at least one suspect involved in the Sears prank had a part in Target's Saturday closure. The suspects could possibly face charges of criminal mischief, disorderly conduct - misdemeanor crimes - as well as being responsible for civil damages, said Medford police Lt. Mike Moran. "After the September terrorist attacks, this kind of foolish behavior is not tolerable anymore," he said. "It's not a prank; it's not funny." Police are looking for two men and two women in their early 20s in connection with the stink bombs at Sears. One man had a shaved head with a long dark ponytail on the side of his head. The other man had dark hair, was wearing a white T-shirt and was described as "chubby." The women were described as standing 5-feet, 4-inches and weighing 175 pounds. One woman had long dark hair with "shaved sides" and was wearing a camouflage jacket and black boots. The other had short, black, spiked hair, witnesses told police. The four suspects were apparently acting disruptive in the store, police said. Reach reporter Sarah Lemon at 776-4487, or e-mail slemon@mailtribune.com |
