Late charge helps Bend overtake South Medford

Daysha Balloun scored 18 points to lead Bend and South Medford watched a third-quarter tie balloon into a 66-51 loss in a non-conference game.

The Panthers, who barely eclipsed the 50-percent mark from the foul line during a 59-57 loss to Mountain View on Friday, went just 4-for-15 and committed 22 fouls Saturday. Bend converted 24 of its 37 free throws.

"That's something we're definitely going to have to fix," said South Medford coach Andrea Jaime. "The officiating was a little questionable at times, but we still didn't play well enough to win."

South Medford held a 14-13 lead after the first quarter, but Bend pushed to a seven-point halftime lead on the heels of a 18-10, second-period advantage.

The Panthers started the second half with a 7-0 run to even the game with six minutes left in the third quarter, but the Lava Bears answered once again to maintain a comfortable lead.

Whitney Grant led the Panthers with 18 points to go along with four steals and three assists. Teammate Kirsten Gillingham added 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Katie Singler contributed 10 points and Natasha Wright four assists and three steals.
