Medford man faces assault charges

A half dozen police officers had to wrestle a man into custody early Sunday after a domestic dispute in north Medford.

Micah Joe Downing, 29, who gave police no local address, was jailed on charges that included assault, kidnapping, harassment, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest.

Medford police Sgt. Chad Teresi said officers were dispatched to the 200 block of Berrydale Avenue about 1:30 a.m. and found Downing and a bloodied woman arguing outside a residence.

Teresi said Downing and the woman went into the residence when police appeared. Teresi said the woman, Downing's wife, tried to leave the building, but Downing prevented her.

Teresi said Downing eventually came out of the residence and started to fight with officers when they tried to handcuff him. He said Downing, who weighs about 250 pounds, bit one of the officers in the melee.

Downing appeared quite intoxicated, Teresi said. Officers had to use pepper spray to restrain him.

Downing was charged with fourth-degree felony assault, second-degree kidnapping, coercion, fourth-degree assault, harassment, three counts of assaulting a police officer, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest.

He was lodged in the Jackson County Jail on bail of $1,036,000.
