Try Internet appraisers for your art

I inherited two C.M. Russell paintings. I would like to know if they are originals or reproductions. Could you recommend someone who could give me an honest appraisal of their worth without purchase in mind?

Check out www.butterfields.com on the Web. The company, established in 1865, offers an appraisal service that can use photographs and other information to aid in verifying the authenticity of an item. Although the company does specialize in the buying and selling of merchandise, it should offer a fair appraisal of your paintings.

Sotheby’s Appraisal Department can be reached at 212-606-7000 or visit www.sothebys.com on the Web.

To find a qualified appraiser in this area, call the International Society of Appraisers at 888-472-4732, the American Society of Appraisers at 800-272-8258 or the Appraisers Association of America at 212-889-5404.
